Foundations: A 15 Week Study In Evangelical Theology

Sept 27: To Know God       

Purpose

To grasp how we can understand God though a careful examination of His scripture, and through special and general revelation.

Method

Look at the different ways that God reveals himself though nature, through godly men and women, and through His scripture.

Oct 4: God’s Word

Purpose

To understand that God’s word, in its proper context, is inerrant and perfect for Christian living.

Method

Delve into the meaning and of scriptural inerrancy and discuss the different between inerrancy and infallibility. Offer proofs for the validity of scripture and the value of its historicity. Give an brief introduction to the concept of hermeneutics and its place in the daily life of a believer.

Oct 11: What God is Like

Purpose

To understand God’s goodness, greatness, transcendence, and immanence and how those terms help our concept of God.

Method

Discuss the different between the aforementioned terms and how they impact our daily walk with him. To give God proper reverence while still desiring a closeness with Him.

Oct 18: Attributes of God

Purpose

To understand the difference and meaning of the communicable and incommunicable attributes of God.

Method

Addressing specific attributes for the purpose of grasping God’s character and to strive to know why he does the things that he does.

Oct 25: What God Does

Purpose

To understand God’s active work in our life, to help decipher His will and plan for us, and to know how the trinity interacts and helps to accomplish all of this.

Method

Looking at what God’s work specifically was in the past, present and future. To examine how His work influences our ultimate purpose and how to align our will to God’s plan. See what unique roles the different members of the Trinity play in all of this and in our own lives.

Nov 1: The Holy Spirit

Purpose

To better understand the character, work, fruits, and gifts of the Holy Spirit in the scriptures and in our daily lives.

Method

First to look at how the Holy Spirit is a distinct member of the Trinity and His work throughout the Old and New Testament. Look at what scripture say he does for the life of the believer in giving each person unique gifts and talents. Finally, an observable way to tell if the Holy Spirit is active in someone’s life through the fruits that they bear.

 

Nov 8: The Divinity and Humanity of Christ

Purpose

To look at the different natures of Christ between His humanity and His deity and to see how each played a vital role in work and life.

Method

To see how Christ had to be both fully a man and fully God and see how those different natures were at play during His time on earth. To know the importance those two aspects of Him played in His ultimate work. To gain a deeper understanding of the conflicts and struggles He endured.

Dec 6: What Christ Does

Purpose

To understand in mechanics of salvation and atonement and how those work in tandem to allow us to be counted as righteous through Christ’s death and resurrection.

Method

Discuss different theories of salvation and atonement and to know the impact it has on us personally. By examining the earth shattering effects of Jesus coming back from the dead we can see how it is the singularly most important event the in the history of the world.

 

Jan 10: The Spiritual Realm

Purpose

To understand the creation of Angels and Demons, their purpose and intent, and to know what place miracles still have on our modern world.

Method

Look at what the scriptures have to say about Angels and Demons and their formation and work. To see what role, they still play in the life of the believer and how we are to treat them. Frankly look at miracles and the popularity and false claims while still honestly examining the reality of them.

Jan 17: Fallen Humanity

Purpose

To understand the doctrine of humanity, and the nature and dimensions of sin.

Method

Look at the implications of the fall of humanity and its lingering effect on a broken world. To look at the nature of sin in the life of an unbeliever and a believer. To see how sin affects every person and how Christ can overcome sin regardless of its scope.

Jan 24: The Afterlife

Purpose

To understand what Heaven and Hell look like to the best of our ability through God’s revelation and the reality of each.

Method

Talk about those who claim to have experienced both heaven and hell and discuss the credibility of such claim. To look at the spiritual realms and how they change and shift when Christ comes back. Paint a clear picture as much as possible though scripture and the insights of godly men and women.

Jan 31: Baptism and Communion

 

Feb 7: The Church

Purpose

To understand the history of the church after Christ left the earth and to grasp the church’s role in society and our role in the church.

Method

Talk about the changes of the church throughout history and the impact these decisions have had on our modern concept of the church. Discuss the duties of the church in a fallen world and how we are called to respond to culture. Talk about the role of the individual believer in the church and what God expects from us on Sunday and beyond.

Feb 15: The Last Things

Purpose

To understand the doctrine of eschatology and to have an idea of what to expect around the time Jesus returns.

Method

Between pre-millennial and post-millennial there lies an expectation of what will happen during the last days, we will look at the role of the church and the believer as we eagerly await Christ coming back. We will also discuss some of the sings that will accompany the last days and how we are called to respond.

Feb 22: Apologetics

Purpose

To understand the proper utilization of apologetics and how we’re called to defend our faith against culture and its view of morality.

Method

Address a handful of specific issues that plague the church and give good reasons for standing up for the truth of God’s word. Look at how we are to wisely use apologetics to not only defend our faith, but ultimately to further God’s kingdom work here on earth.
